A woman of Banu Abd al-Ashhal (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), between me and the mosque there is a filthy path; what should we do when it rains? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there not a path after it that is cleaner than it?" I said: Indeed there is. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is in exchange for that."

Mu'adh bin al-Ala narrates from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I came with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Friday prayer, and he was walking. On the way, a pool of mud and water came between Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and the mosque, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took off his sandals and his trousers. I said: "O Commander of the Believers, give them to me; I will carry them for you." He said: "No!" Then he waded through, and when he had crossed, he put on his trousers and sandals, then led the people in prayer and did not wash his feet.
