Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Both of them (the two surahs) are written in the Mushaf that was compiled in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); then it remained with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), then with Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her); then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) united all the people upon it. Both of them are part of the Book of Allah, and I love to recite them in my prayer."

Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) about the Mu'awwidhatayn, and he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Mu'awwidhatayn, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was said to me, so I said it."
"So we say just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said."

Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) about the Mu'awwidhatayn and said: O Abu al-Mundhir! Your brother, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), does not count them as part of the Qur'an. He said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These words were said to me, so I said them." So we too say just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said.

(a) Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some verses have been revealed to me the like of which no one has seen," meaning the Mu'awwidhatayn.
(b) The wording of the narration of Muhammad bin Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) is: "Tonight some verses were revealed to me the like of which I have not seen; they are the Mu'awwidhatayn."

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was walking ahead of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), leading it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uqbah! Shall I not teach you the two best surahs that are recited?" I said: "Of course, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak" [Surah al-Falaq: 1] and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" [Surah al-Nas: 1]. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed that I was not very pleased. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the morning prayer and recited these two surahs (the Mu'awwidhatayn). Then he said to me: "O Uqbah! What do you think (of these surahs)?"
This is how al-Ala' bin Kathir narrated it; Ibn Wahb narrated it from Mu'awiyah from al-Ala' bin al-Harith, and that is more correct.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him): During a journey I was walking ahead of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uqbah! Shall I not teach you the two best surahs that are recited?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak" [Surah al-Falaq: 1] and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" [Surah al-Nas: 1]. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed that I was not very pleased, so in the morning, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted to lead the people in the morning prayer, he recited these same two surahs in the prayer. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he turned towards me and said: "O Uqbah! What do you think about these surahs?"

Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr narrates from his father, and he from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Mu'awwidhatayn, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited them while leading the Fajr prayer.

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once I was travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) between al-Juhfah and al-Abwa' when suddenly a pitch-black storm enveloped us. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began seeking refuge with "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak" [Surah al-Falaq: 1] and "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" [Surah al-Nas: 1], and he began saying: "O Uqbah! Seek refuge with these two (the Mu'awwidhatayn); no one seeking refuge has ever sought refuge with anything like them." Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He used to recite these two while leading us in prayer.
