(a) Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It reached me that a man recited a verse of prostration in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and prostrated, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also prostrated with him. Then another man recited a verse of prostration, and he too was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he waited for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to prostrate, but he did not prostrate. So he said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I recited a verse of prostration and you did not prostrate? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You were the imam; had you prostrated, I would have prostrated with you."
(b) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) also narrated this report and said: I think that he was Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), because it is he who narrates that he recited in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he did not prostrate, and also because the one who narrated both hadiths is Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him).
(c) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: What Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned is possible.
Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Farwah narrated it from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Hurayrah, as connected (mawsul), and Ishaq is da'if (weak). It was also narrated from al-Awza'i, from Qurrah, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, and that too is weak. What is preserved of Ata bin Yasar's hadith is mursal, and his hadith from Zayd bin Thabit is connected (mawsul) and abridged. And Allah Almighty knows best.
