Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When the iqamah is called, do not come running, but come walking with calm and tranquillity; whatever you catch, pray it, and whatever you have missed, complete it afterwards."

(a) Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the prayer has started, do not come running, but come walking with calm and tranquillity; whatever you catch, pray it, and whatever you have missed, complete it."
(b) In another narration: "Make up what has been prayed before you came."
The narration of (Ibrahim bin Sa'd,) his son, from him (Sa'd bin Ibrahim), together with al-Zuhri's corroboration of it, is more correct.

Muslim bin al-Hajjaj said: I do not know anyone other than Ibn Uyaynah who narrated this wording, "and make up what you have missed", from al-Zuhri. Muslim said: Ibn Uyaynah erred in this wording.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the iqamah is called, let none of you come running to the prayer; rather let him come walking with calm and tranquillity. Let him pray what he catches and make up what has passed."
(b) Abu Rafi' narrates the like of this from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Those who narrate it as "fa-atimmu" (complete it) are more numerous, better at memorising and closer in companionship to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), so their version is preferable. And Allah knows best.

Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Once we were praying with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he heard a commotion of people. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, he called them and asked: "What is the matter with you?" They said: We hurried to the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do so; rather, when you come to the prayer, let calm and tranquillity be upon you; whatever of the prayer (with the congregation) you catch, pray it, and whatever you have missed, complete it."

(b) Al-Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I mentioned this to al-Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and Sa'id bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him), and they said: Whatever you catch of the imam's prayer is the first part of your prayer.

Qatadah also narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib the like of the saying of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).
Although this is mursal (with a gap in the chain) from Ali, it is a corroborating report (shahid) for the narration of al-Harith from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

(a) Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Sunnah, when a man catches one rak'ah of the Maghrib prayer with the imam, is that he sit with the imam for the final sitting; when the imam says the salam, he stands and prays the second rak'ah and sits for the tashahhud, then he stands and prays the third rak'ah and recites the tashahhud in it, and then says the salam. The other prayers in which one sits follow this same method.
(b) Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Tell me, which prayer is it in which the tashahhud is recited three times in three rak'ahs? When he was asked about it, he said: It is the Maghrib prayer, when a man misses one rak'ah of it; then he recites the tashahhud in the other rak'ahs he catches with the imam, and he also recites the final tashahhud.

Amr bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) that he missed one rak'ah of the Maghrib prayer. When the imam said the salam, he stood up to complete his prayer and raised his voice in recitation. It is as though I can still hear his recitation: "So I have warned you of a Fire that blazes" [Surah al-Layl: 14].
