أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ أَبُو عَمْرٍو عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ السَّمَّاكِ، ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الْمُنَادِي، ثنا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ الْعَدَوِيِّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ الصَّامِتِ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " يَقْطَعُ صَلَاةَ الرَّجُلِ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِثْلُ مُؤَخِّرَةِ الرَّحْلِ: الْمَرْأَةُ وَالْحِمَارُ وَالْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ " قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ فَمَا بَالُ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْأَبْيَضِ مِنَ الْأَحْمَرِ؟ قَالَ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَمَا سَأَلْتَنِي، فَقَالَ: " الْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ شَيْطَانٌ " أَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ، وَيُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، وَسُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، وَجَرِيرِ بْنِ حَازِمٍ وَسَلْمَ بْنِ أَبِي الذَّيَّالِ، وَعَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ، فَسَاقَ حَدِيثَ يُونُسَ ثُمَّ أَحَالَ عَلَيْهِ حَدِيثَ الْبَاقِينَ، وَهَذَا مِنْهُ، رَحِمَنَا اللهُ، وَإِيَّاهُ تَجَوُّزٌ فَحَدِيثُ بَعْضِهِمْ.
Abdullah bin al-Samit (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When there is nothing in front of the person praying equal to the back of a saddle, then a woman, a donkey and a black dog break his prayer." I said: "O Abu Dharr, what is the reason for the black colour? Why is the prayer not broken by a red or white dog?" He said: "My nephew, I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) just as you have asked me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The black dog is a devil.'"
كَمَا أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحِ بْنِ هَانِي، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، ثنا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، ثنا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: " يَقْطَعُ صَلَاةَ الرَّجُلِ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِثْلُ آخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ: الْمَرْأَةُ وَالْحِمَارُ وَالْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ " فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ أَرَأَيْتَ الْكَلْبَ الْأَسْوَدَ مِنَ الْكَلْبِ الْأَحْمَرِ مِنَ الْكَلْبِ الْأَبْيَضِ؟ قَالَ: قَالَ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي إِنِّي سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَمَا سَأَلْتَنِي فَقَالَ: " الْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ شَيْطَانٌ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ شَيْبَانَ بْنِ فَرُّوخَ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسُقْهُ، وَهَكَذَا قَالَهُ عَاصِمٌ ⦗٣٨٩⦘ الْأَحْوَلُ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ جَعَلَ أَوَّلَ الْحَدِيثِ مِنْ قَوْلِ أَبِي ذَرٍّ، ثُمَّ جَعَلَهُ مَرْفُوعًا بِالسُّؤَالِ فِي آخِرِهِ وَأَعْرَضَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنِ الِاحْتِجَاجِ بِرِوَايَةِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، وَاحْتَجَّ بِهَا غَيْرُهُ مِنَ الْحُفَّاظِ وَقَدْ أَشَارَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ إِلَى تَضْعِيفِ الْحَدِيثِ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ، وَخِلَافُهُ مَا هُوَ أَثْبَتُ مِنْهُ، فَإِمَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ غَيْرَ مَحْفُوظٍ أَوْ يَكُونَ الْمُرَادُ بِهِ أَنْ يَلْهُوَ بِبَعْضِ مَا يَمُرُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَيَقْطَعَهُ عَنِ الِاشْتِغَالِ بِهَا لَا أَنَّهُ يُفْسِدُ الصَّلَاةَ، وَهَذَا الَّذِي حُمِلَ الْحَدِيثُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْلَى بِهِ، فَنَحْنُ نَحْتَجُّ بِمِثْلِ إِسْنَادِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، وَلَهُ شَوَاهِدُ بَعْضُهَا صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلُهُ.
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When there is nothing in front of the person praying equal to the back of a saddle, then a woman, a donkey and a black dog (by passing in front) break his prayer." The narrator says: I said: "O Abu Dharr, what is the reason for the black colour? Why is the prayer not broken by a red or white dog?" Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Nephew, I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) just as you have asked me, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The black dog is a devil.'"
Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari refrained from using the narration of Abdullah bin al-Samit as evidence, while other huffaz used it as evidence.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) indicated that this hadith is weak, and the narration contrary to it is more established than it. So either it is not preserved (ghayr mahfuz), or what is meant is that when these things pass in front of the person praying they cause heedlessness in the prayer and cut off his attention, not that the prayer becomes invalid by it; and interpreting the hadith in this way is better.
We take the chain of this hadith as evidence, and it has some supporting narrations which, like it, have authentic chains.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو صَالِحِ بْنُ أَبِي طَاهِرٍ، أنبأ جَدِّي يَحْيَى بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الْقَاضِي ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أنبأ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْأَصَمِّ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْأَصَمِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " يَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ: الْمَرْأَةُ وَالْكَلْبُ وَالْحِمَارُ، وَيَقِي ذَلِكَ مِثْلُ مُؤَخِّرَةِ الرَّحْلِ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَيُرْوَى عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: وَقِيلَ: عَنْهُ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَقِيلَ: عَنْهُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ كِلَاهُمَا، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُخْتَصَرًا.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman, a dog and a donkey break the prayer, and something equal to the back of a saddle protects against that."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نَصْرٍ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَتَادَةَ أنبأ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمَدِينِيُّ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " يَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ: الْمَرْأَةُ الْحَائِضُ وَالْكَلْبُ " قَالَ يَحْيَى وَهُوَ الْقَطَّانُ: لَمْ يَرْفَعْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ أَحَدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ غَيْرُ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ يَحْيَى: وَأَنَا أُفَرِّقُهُ قَالَ: وَرَوَاهُ ابْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ وَهِشَامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، يَعْنِي مَوْقُوفًا قَالَ يَحْيَى: وَبَلَغَنِي أَنَّ هَمَّامًا يُدْخِلُ بَيْنَ قَتَادَةَ وَجَابِرِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ أَبَا الْخَلِيلِ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ: وَلَمْ يَرْفَعْ هَمَّامٌ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ: وَالثَّابِتُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ لَا يُفْسِدُ الصَّلَاةَ وَلَكِنْ يُكْرَهُ، وَذَلِكَ يَدُلُّ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ مَعَ قَوْلِهِ يَقْطَعُ عَلَى أَنَّ الْمُرَادَ بِالْقَطْعِ غَيْرُ الْإِفْسَادِ، وَيُرْوَى مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا.
(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman who has reached puberty and a dog (by passing in front) break the prayer."
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: It is established from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that this does not invalidate the prayer, but it is disliked, and that by "breaking" invalidation is not meant.
Yahya (al-Qattan) said: No one narrated this hadith from Qatadah as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) except Shu'bah; Ibn Abi Arubah and Hisham narrated it from Qatadah as mawquf (the Companion's own words).
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: It is established from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that this does not invalidate the prayer, but it is disliked, and that by "breaking" invalidation is not meant.
Yahya (al-Qattan) said: No one narrated this hadith from Qatadah as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) except Shu'bah; Ibn Abi Arubah and Hisham narrated it from Qatadah as mawquf (the Companion's own words).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ هُوَ الْأَصَمُّ ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ هُوَ ابْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدُّورِيُّ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَحْرٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: أَحْسَبُهُ أَسْنَدَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " يَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ الْكَلْبُ وَالْحِمَارُ ⦗٣٩٠⦘ وَالْمَرْأَةُ الْحَائِضُ وَالْيَهُودِيُّ وَالنَّصْرَانِيُّ وَالْمَجُوسِيُّ وَالْخِنْزِيرُ " قَالَ: وَيَكْفِيكَ إِذَا كَانُوا مِنْكَ عَلَى قَدْرِ رَمْيَةٍ بِحَجَرٍ لَمْ يَقْطَعُوا صَلَاتَكَ ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates (the narrator said: I think he attributed it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(When a man prays without a sutrah, then) a dog, a donkey, a woman who has reached puberty, a Jew, a Christian, a Magian and a pig (by passing in front) break his prayer; and if they pass at a distance farther than a stone's throw from you, the prayer will not be broken."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبَصْرِيُّ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ثنا مُعَاذٌ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: أَحْسَبُهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى غَيْرِ السُّتْرَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يَقْطَعُ صَلَاتَهُ " وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ النَّصْرَانِيَّ قَالَ: " وَالْمَرْأَةُ " وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ الْحَائِضَ قَالَ: " وَيُجْزِي عَنْهُ إِذَا مَرُّوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى قَدْرِ رَمْيَةٍ بِحَجَرٍ ".
The narrator said: I think it is from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "When a person prays without a sutrah, these things break his prayer." He did not mention the Christian, and he mentioned "the woman" without the word "who has reached puberty". And he said: "However, if these things pass at a distance farther than a stone's throw, the prayer is not broken."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْأَنْبَارِيُّ، ثنا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ مَوْلًى لِيَزِيدَ بْنِ نِمْرَانَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ نِمْرَانَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا بِتَبُوكَ مُقْعَدًا، فَقَالَ: مَرَرْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا عَلَى حِمَارٍ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَقَالَ: " اللهُمَّ اقْطَعْ أَثَرَهُ " فَمَا مَشَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ بَعْدُ.
Yazid bin Nimran (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: At Tabuk I saw a man who could not stand. He related: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying and I passed in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him) riding a donkey, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, cripple his feet." After that day I could not walk.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا كَثِيرُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ثنا أَبُو حَيْوَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ بِإِسْنَادِهِ وَمَعْنَاهُ، زَادَ: فَقَالَ: " قَطَعَ صَلَاتَنَا قَطَعَ اللهُ أَثَرَهُ " قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ: وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو مُسْهِرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ: " قَطَعَ صَلَاتَنَا ".
Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on him) added that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has broken our prayer; may Allah Almighty break his feet."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، وَسُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، قَالَا: ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ غَزْوَانَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّهُ نَزَلَ بِتَبُوكَ وَهُوَ حَاجٌّ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ مُقْعَدٌ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَمْرِهِ، فَقَالَ: سَأُحَدِّثُكَ حَدِيثًا فَلَا تُحَدِّثْ بِهِ مَا سَمِعْتَ أَنِّي حَيٌّ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَزَلَ بِتَبُوكَ إِلَى نَخْلَةٍ فَقَالَ: " هَذِهِ قِبْلَتُنَا " ثُمَّ صَلَّى إِلَيْهَا قَالَ: فَأَقْبَلْتُ وَأَنَا غُلَامٌ أَسْعَى حَتَّى مَرَرْتُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا فَقَالَ: " قَطَعَ صَلَاتَنَا قَطَعَ اللهُ أَثَرَهُ " فَمَا قُمْتُ عَلَيْهَا إِلَى يَوْمِي هَذَا.
Sa'id bin Ghazwan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that he had set out intending Hajj and camped at Tabuk, where he saw a man who could not stand. He asked him the reason, and the man replied: "I will tell you something, but do not tell it to anyone else during my lifetime. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) camped at Tabuk beside a date palm and said: 'This is our qiblah.' Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed facing it. I was a boy at the time. I came running and passed between him (peace and blessings be upon him) and that tree, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'He has broken our prayer; may Allah Almighty break his feet.' From that time until today I have not been able to stand on them."
