The wife of the Messenger, the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying in the house when Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came. When he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying, he too stood at his side and began to pray. Meanwhile a scorpion appeared and reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then it left him and came towards Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this, he struck it dead with his shoe. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw no harm in his killing it.

(a) It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A single blow of your whip is enough for the snake, whether you hit the mark or miss."
(b) If this report is authentic, then what is meant, and Allah knows best, is that one blow suffices in carrying out the command in the hadith, in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that it be killed. And what is meant, and Allah knows best, is when it escapes by itself upon a miss; it is not meant to forbid more than one blow.
