(a) Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: In the beginning, any one of us would talk with the person beside him during prayer. When this verse was revealed: "And stand before Allah in devout silence" [Surah al-Baqarah: 238], we were commanded to keep silent and to refrain from talking.
(b) Yahya al-Qattan narrates from Isma'il, who narrates from al-Harith bin Shubayl: We used to talk in prayer; any one of us would speak to his brother about any need. But when this verse (was revealed): "Guard the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout silence" [Surah al-Baqarah: 238], we were commanded to refrain from talking.

(a) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prayer, we would greet him and he would return our greeting. When we returned from the king of Abyssinia (the Negus), we greeted him but he gave us no reply. So we said: O Messenger of Allah, previously we would greet you in prayer and you would reply to us? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In prayer there is preoccupation."
(b) In the narration of Abu Badr Shuja' bin al-Walid: We said: O Messenger of Allah, you used to return our greeting; why did you not return our greeting today? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In prayer there is preoccupation."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came (from Abyssinia) into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying at that time. I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return the greeting. I was seized with worry over old and new matters. (When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer,) I said: O Messenger of Allah, has some new command come? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty sends down for His Prophet whatever new command He wills. Now the new command of Allah is that you should not talk in prayer."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We used to give greetings, speak and talk to one another about our needs in prayer. But when (on returning from Abyssinia) I came one day into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying at that time. I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return the greeting. I was seized with worry over old and new matters. Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on an errand of his (own), and I returned having completed it. I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he did not reply. At that time he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on an errand (during the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq). I returned having completed it, came into his (peace and blessings be upon him) presence and greeted him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. Something came into my heart, Allah knows what, and I said to myself: Perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is displeased because I came late. Then I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. Now a stronger feeling than the first came into my heart. Then I greeted him a third time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) replied and said: "Listen! I did not return your greeting only because I was praying." He (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his she-camel, and it was facing not towards the qiblah but another direction.

Mu'awiyah bin al-Hakam al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was praying (in congregation) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man sneezed, and I said: 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you). The people began to stare at me. I said: Woe is me, may my mother lose me! Why are you looking at me? Then they began striking their thighs with their hands. When I saw that they were silencing me, I fell silent. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he called me, may my father and mother be ransomed for him (peace and blessings be upon him). I have never seen, before him or after him, a teacher like the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), better in teaching than him (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) neither struck me, nor scolded me, nor reviled me; he only said: "This is the prayer; talking and the like is not permissible in it. It consists of tasbih, takbir and the recitation of the Qur'an."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin al-Hakam al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him): When I came into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me many rulings of Islam, namely: "When you sneeze, say 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah); and when someone else sneezes and says 'Al-hamdu lillah', you say 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you)." Once I was standing in prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly a man sneezed and said 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise belongs to Allah alone), and I said in a loud voice 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you). The people began to stare at me until I had to say: What is the matter with you, that you are looking at me with such looks? So they said 'Subhan Allah' (Allah is free of all imperfection). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, he asked: "Who was the man who spoke?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) was told: This Bedouin. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and said: "The prayer is only for reciting the Qur'an and the remembrance of Allah, so when you are in prayer, engage only in recitation and remembrance." I have not seen any teacher more kind and gentle than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
