Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin al-Hakam al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "We have only recently become Muslims; Allah has blessed us with the favour of Islam. Even now some of us take omens from birds." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is merely a notion they find in their minds; let these omens not stop them (from doing anything)."
He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, some of us go to soothsayers (those who claim to tell the unseen)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They should not go." He again said: "O Messenger of Allah, some of us draw lines (and take omens from them)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Only one prophet among the prophets (Idris, peace be upon him) used to draw lines; so whoever's line agrees with his, that is correct."
He said: Once I was praying with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). One of the worshippers sneezed, and I said: 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you), and the people began looking at me askance. I said: "Woe is me, may my mother lose me! Why are you looking at me?" They began striking their thighs with their hands. I understood that they wanted to silence me (and I became annoyed), but I fell silent. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he called me, may my father and mother be ransomed for him. I have never seen a teacher more kind and gentle than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), neither before him nor after him. By Allah, he neither struck me, nor scolded me, nor reviled me; he only said: "This is the prayer; talking is not permissible in it. It consists only of tasbih, takbir and the recitation of the Qur'an."
(b) This hadith is narrated similarly through another chain, but in place of the words "Indeed we were close to the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), then Allah Almighty brought Islam" it has these words: "He said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Indeed some men among us."

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin al-Hakam al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him): I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). A man standing beside me sneezed, and I said 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you). The people began looking at me. I said: Woe is me, may my mother lose me! I am praying and you keep staring at me? They began striking their thighs with their hands; they wanted to silence me (so I fell silent). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, may my parents be ransomed for him, I have never seen, before him or after him, a teacher more kind and gentle than him. By Allah, he neither struck me, nor scolded me, nor reviled me; rather he said: "This is the prayer; conversing with people is not proper in it. It is only for tasbih, tahmid and the recitation of the Qur'an."
(b) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) states that it is not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to repeat the prayer, since he had spoken in the prayer out of ignorance.
