(a) Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: In the beginning, any one of us would talk with the person beside him during prayer. When this verse was revealed: "And stand before Allah in devout silence" [Surah al-Baqarah: 238], we were commanded to keep silent and to refrain from talking.
(b) Yahya al-Qattan narrates from Isma'il, who narrates from al-Harith bin Shubayl: We used to talk in prayer; any one of us would speak to his brother about any need. But when this verse (was revealed): "Guard the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout silence" [Surah al-Baqarah: 238], we were commanded to refrain from talking.
