Some of our companions have drawn evidence on this matter from the general statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Pray whatever part of the prayer you catch, then complete what you have missed."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you come to the prayer, do not come running; come walking with calm and tranquillity. Pray whatever you catch, and complete whatever you have missed."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever forgets to pray a prayer and then remembers it while he is praying with the imam, let him continue the prayer; when he has finished the prayer, let him repeat the prayer he had forgotten, and then after that let him also repeat this other prayer which he prayed with the imam."
Abu Ibrahim al-Tarjumani alone narrated this hadith as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), and what is correct is that it is the statement of Ibn Umar, mawquf (stopping at the Companion).

A similar narration is reported from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) through another chain, without attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) also narrated it in this way, as mawquf (stopping at Ibn Umar).

(a) Nafi' narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Whoever forgets one of his prayers and remembers it while he is praying another prayer behind the imam, then when the imam says the salam, let him pray the prayer he had forgotten, and then after that let him repeat the other prayer."
(b) Ibn Wahb says that Imam Malik, Layth bin Sa'd and Yahya bin Abdullah bin Salim (may Allah have mercy on them) said the same.
(c) Shaykh al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Repeating the other prayer, the one prayed with the imam, is recommended (mustahabb) according to Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him), not obligatory. And Allah knows best.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3195
(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you forgets to pray a prayer and then remembers it while he is offering an obligatory prayer, let him continue the one he is praying. When he has finished it, then let him make up the one he had forgotten."
Abu Ahmad (Ibn Adi) said: Umar bin Abi Umar is majhul (unknown); I do not know anyone other than Baqiyyah who narrates from him.
(b) Shaykh al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: All the rulings of the prayer in which man and woman differ go back to covering, because the woman is commanded to do everything that gives her greater covering.
The coming chapters contain their details and the explanation of this meaning. And success is from Allah.
