Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The woman used to be commanded, when she prostrates, to press her stomach against her thighs so that her buttocks are not raised, and not to keep (her limbs) apart in the way a man keeps them apart."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When a woman prostrates, she should keep her thighs together.
Two weak hadiths have been narrated on this matter, the like of which are not used as evidence.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best rows of the men are the first rows, and the best rows of the women are the last rows." He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command the men to keep their arms away from their sides in prostration, and to command the women to prostrate drawn together; he used to command the men to lay down the left foot and keep the right one upright in the tashahhud, and to command the women to sit cross-legged. And he said: "O assembly of women! Do not raise your gaze in your prayer, but keep it lowered, so that you do not look at the private parts of the men."
The first and the last wordings of this hadith are well known from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and what is between them is munkar (rejected). And Allah knows best.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a woman sits in the prayer, she should place one thigh over the other thigh, and when she prostrates, she should press her stomach against her thighs; this gives her the greatest covering. And when Allah Almighty looks at her, He says: 'O My angels! Bear witness that I have forgiven her.'"

A similar hadith is reported through another chain. In it, the narrator Abu Muti' is weak; he is clearly weak in his hadiths, and most of what he narrates is not corroborated.
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared Abu Muti' weak. Likewise, Ata' bin Ajlan is da'if (weak). A munqati' (broken-chain) hadith has also been narrated on this, and it is better than the two connected ones before it.

It is narrated from Yazid bin Abi Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two women who were praying. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you prostrate, press part of your body against the ground, for in this the woman is not like the man."
