It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to supplicate for someone or against someone, he would make qunut after the ruku', and sometimes, after saying 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka al-hamd' (Allah hears the one who praises Him; our Lord, and to You belongs all praise), he would then, while still standing, make this supplication: "O Allah, rescue al-Walid bin al-Walid, Salamah bin Hisham and the weak among the Muslims. O Allah, afflict the disbelievers of Mudar with Your severe punishment, and make this punishment encompass them for a period like the famine of Yusuf." He would recite these words aloud. Sometimes in the Fajr prayer he (peace and blessings be upon him) would make this supplication against them: "O Allah, curse so-and-so and so-and-so," naming tribes of the Arabs as he supplicated against them, until Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "You have no say at all in the matter; (Allah may) either accept their repentance or punish them, for they are wrongdoers" [Surah Al Imran: 128].

Sa'id bin al-Musayyab and Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on them both) narrate that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the recitation in the Fajr prayer, he would say the takbir and go into ruku'; then, when he raised his head from ruku', he would say: 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka al-hamd' (Allah hears the one who praises Him; our Lord, and to You belongs all praise). Then, while still standing, he would say: 'Allahumma anji al-Walida bna al-Walid, wa Salamata bna Hisham, wa Ayyasha bna Abi Rabi'ah, wal-mustad'afina mina al-mu'minin. Allahumma-shdud wat'ataka ala Mudar, waj'alha alayhim sinina ka-sini Yusuf. Allahumma-l'an Lihyana wa Ri'lan wa Dhakwana wa Usayyata asat Allaha wa rasulah' (O Allah, rescue al-Walid bin al-Walid, Salamah bin Hisham, Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah and the weak and helpless Muslims. O Allah, seize the disbelievers of the tribe of Mudar with Your severe grip, and lengthen the period of this punishment upon them like the famine of Yusuf. O Allah, send Your curse upon Lihyan, Ri'l and Dhakwan, and curse Usayyah too, who disobeyed Allah and His Messenger). Then, when this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) abandoned the qunut, namely: "You have no say at all in the matter; (Allah may) either accept their repentance or punish them, for they are wrongdoers" [Surah Al Imran: 128].

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rose from ruku' in the second rak'ah of the morning prayer, he would say: 'Allahumma anji al-Walida bna al-Walid, wa Salamata bna Hisham, wa Ayyasha bna Abi Rabi'ah, wal-mustad'afina bi-Makkah. Allahumma-shdud wat'ataka ala Mudar. Allahumma-j'alha alayhim sinina ka-sini Yusuf' (O Allah, rescue al-Walid bin al-Walid, Salamah bin Hisham, Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah and the weak Muslims of Makkah. O Allah, make Your grip severe upon the disbelievers of Mudar. O Allah, keep this punishment upon them for a long period, like the famine of Yusuf).

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح۔ اخرجه الشافعي 895۔ قد تقدم في الذي قبله»
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying the Isha prayer (al-Awza'i used the words "Salat al-Atamah", and likewise in another narration the words "al-Isha' al-Akhirah" occur). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) said 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him), he made this supplication before going into prostration: "O Allah, rescue Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah. O Allah, rescue Salamah bin Hisham. O Allah, rescue al-Walid bin al-Walid. O Allah, rescue the weak and helpless believers. O Allah, tighten Your grip upon the disbelievers of Mudar. O Allah, make this punishment encompass them like the famine of Yusuf."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' in the last rak'ah of the Isha prayer, he would recite qunut after the ruku': "'Allahumma anji al-Walida bna al-Walid, Allahumma anji Ayyasha bna Abi Rabi'ah, Allahumma anji Salamata bna Hisham, Allahumma anji al-mustad'afina mina al-mu'minin, Allahumma-shdud wat'ataka ala Mudar, Allahumma-j'alha sinina ka-sini Yusuf' (O Allah, rescue al-Walid bin al-Walid; O Allah, rescue Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah; O Allah, rescue Salamah bin Hisham; O Allah, rescue the weak among the believers; O Allah, afflict the disbelievers of Mudar with Your severe punishment, and keep this punishment upon them for a long period like the famine of Yusuf)."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah, I will lead you in a prayer that most closely resembles the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (may Allah be pleased with him), in the last rak'ah of the Zuhr, Isha and Fajr prayers, after saying 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah has heard the one who praised Him), would supplicate for the believers and supplicate against the disbelievers.

(b) Mu'adh bin Hisham narrated it from his father with the same meaning, except that he said: "By Allah, I will bring the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) close to you." Likewise, this narration is also found in Sahih Muslim and Sahih al-Bukhari.
(c) From all these narrations, qunut is established in three prayers.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite qunut in the morning and Maghrib prayers.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3091
Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that whatever obligatory prayer the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, he would recite qunut in it.

Salim narrates from his father, Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after raising his head from ruku' in the second rak'ah of Fajr, make this supplication: 'Allahumma-l'an fulanan wa fulanan' (O Allah, send Your curse upon so-and-so and so-and-so). Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "You have no say at all in the matter" [Surah Al Imran: 128].
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3093
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the people of the tribes of Ri'l, Dhakwan, Usayyah and Banu Lihyan asked for help against an enemy, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent seventy Companions to help them. We used to call them the qurra' (reciters) of our time; they would gather firewood by day and stand in prayer by night. When they reached the place of Bi'r Ma'unah, these tribes martyred them and betrayed them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this incident, he supplicated for a month in the Fajr prayer against some of the Arab tribes: Ri'l, Dhakwan, Usayyah and Banu Lihyan. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We used to recite Qur'an about them, then this ruling was lifted: "Convey to our people that we have met our Lord; He is pleased with us and He has made us pleased."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3094
(a) Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as grieved and distressed as he was over the people of Bi'r Ma'unah and the expedition of al-Mundhir bin Amr. For a month he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated in the Fajr prayer against those who had martyred these Companions, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate against Ri'l, Dhakwan, Usayyah and Banu Lihyan.
(b) Qatadah, Abd al-Aziz bin Suhayb, Abu Mijlaz Lahiq bin Humayd, Anas bin Sirin, Musa bin Anas and Asim bin Sulayman al-Ahwal (may Allah have mercy on them) all narrate from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) the word 'shahran' (for a month), meaning that he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against them for one month.
(c) Malik bin Anas (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it likewise from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talhah (may Allah have mercy on him), from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), as thirty days; and Hammam (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates it via Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) as forty days.
(d) The narration of 30 days is the correct one.
(e) From Humayd al-Tawil (may Allah have mercy on him), via Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), the story of the Uraniyyin is transmitted, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against them in prayer twenty-five times and after that sent a detachment after them; these are two separate stories.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3095
(a) Humayd al-Tawil narrates from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that young men of the Ansar would listen attentively to the Qur'an, then withdraw to a corner of Madinah; their families would think they were in the mosque, and the people of the mosque would think they were at home. They would pray through the night until, when the morning drew near, some of them would go to gather firewood and some would go to fetch fresh water. Then they would come back and place their bundles and water-skins at the doors of the chambers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent them to Bi'r Ma'unah, and there they were all martyred. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against their killers for fifteen nights.
(b) Likewise, Alqamah bin Abi Alqamah narrated it from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). In it he says that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against their killers for fifteen days.
(c) Likewise, Ja'far bin Muhammad also transmitted a mursal narration from his father, which mentions fifteen days.
(d) However, the narrations of one month are more famous, clearer and more authentic. 'Wallahu a'lam' (And Allah knows best). Most of the narrations from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) establish qunut in the morning prayer, and likewise it is established from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Maghrib prayer as well.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3096
(a) Abu Qilabah narrates from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that qunut is in the Fajr and Maghrib prayers.
(b) In another narration it is stated that qunut is made in the Maghrib and Fajr prayers.
(c) From Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) it is also transmitted, regarding this story, that it was in all the prayers.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3097
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that for a whole month the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited qunut in the last rak'ah of Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr, after saying 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah has heard the one who praised Him), and he kept supplicating against Ri'l, Dhakwan and Usayyah of Banu Sulaym among the Arab tribes, and those praying behind him would say Amin. These (martyrs) were the people whom he (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent to those tribes to invite them to Islam, and they killed them. Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This is where qunut began.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3098
Sayyiduna Khufaf bin Ima' al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say in the morning prayer: "O Allah, curse Banu Lihyan, Ri'l and Dhakwan, and Usayyah too, who disobeyed Allah and His Messenger; may Allah forgive Banu Ghifar, and may Allah keep Banu Aslam safe."
(293) Chapter: Abandoning qunut in all the prayers other than Subh once the calamity has lifted, and (qunut) in the Subh prayer for a people or against a people by their names or their tribes
The chapter on abandoning qunut in the remaining prayers besides the morning prayer after the calamity has ended, and on supplicating in the morning prayer for or against a people by naming them or their tribes.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3099
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited qunut in the last rak'ah of the Isha prayer. After saying 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah', he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept reciting for a month: 'Allahumma anji al-Walida bna al-Walid, Allahumma anji Salamata bna Hisham, Allahumma anji Ayyasha bna Abi Rabi'ah, Allahumma anji al-mustad'afina mina al-mu'minin, Allahumma-shdud wat'ataka ala Mudar, Allahumma-j'alha alayhim sinina ka-sini Yusuf' (O Allah, rescue al-Walid bin al-Walid. O Allah, rescue Salamah bin Hisham. O Allah, rescue Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah, and rescue the weak Muslims. O Allah, make Your grip severe upon Mudar. O Allah, keep the punishment upon them for a long period like the famine of Yusuf).
Through another chain there is a similar narration, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited qunut in the Isha prayer for a month. In it he did not mention Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah, and at its end he added that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not supplicate for them, so I reminded him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not see them? They have escaped from the disbelievers and arrived."
Imam Muslim narrated this report in his Sahih, but he also mentioned Ayyash, and at its end it says that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped making the supplication after that. I said: "I see that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has stopped supplicating for them." It was said: "Do you not see that they have escaped and arrived?"
