أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حِمْشَاذَ الْعَدْلُ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْقَاضِي، ثنا عَارِمُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، ثنا ثَابِتُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، ثنا هِلَالُ بْنُ خَبَّابٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: " قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَهْرًا مُتَتَابِعًا فِي الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ وَالصُّبْحِ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ إِذَا قَالَ: سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأَخِيرَةِ يَدْعُو عَلَى حَيٍّ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ وَعَلَى رِعْلٍ وَذَكْوَانَ وَعُصَيَّةَ، وَيُؤَمِّنْ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ، وَكَانَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمْ يَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَقَتَلُوهُمْ " قَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ هَذَا مِفْتَاحُ الْقُنُوتِ.
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that for a whole month the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited qunut in the last rak'ah of Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr, after saying 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah has heard the one who praised Him), and he kept supplicating against Ri'l, Dhakwan and Usayyah of Banu Sulaym among the Arab tribes, and those praying behind him would say Amin. These (martyrs) were the people whom he (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent to those tribes to invite them to Islam, and they killed them. Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This is where qunut began.
