Jabir bin Yazid bin al-Aswad narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he turned away from the qiblah and faced the people.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) that when we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we liked to stand on his right side so that he would sit facing us. The narrator relates: I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting: 'Rabbi qini adhabaka yawma tab'athu ibadak' (O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants).

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the lightest of people in leading prayer, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept balance in the prayer. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and as soon as he gave the salam he would stand up. Then I prayed with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too, when he gave the salam, would quickly get up and stand, as though he were rising from something hot.
(b) Masruq relates that when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the salam, he would stand up as though he had been sitting on a hot stone. And it was narrated to us from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) too that when he gave the salam he would stand up.
Abdullah bin Farrukh al-Misri is alone in narrating the first report, and he has singular reports (afrad); and Allah knows best.

Abu al-Zinad (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I heard Kharijah bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him); he used to criticise those imams who, after giving the salam to end the prayer, would remain sitting just as they were in the prayer, and he would say: The sunnah way in this matter is that the imam gets up after giving the salam.
