May blessings be sent on anyone other than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the saying of Allah: "And pray for them; indeed your prayer is a comfort for them"

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ، ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، وَسُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِأَبِي الْوَلِيدِ قَالَا: ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الشَّجَرَةِ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَتَاهُ قَوْمٌ بِصَدَقَاتِهِمْ قَالَ: " اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ " فَأَتَاهُ أَبِي بِصَدَقَةٍ، فَقَالَ: " اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى آلِ أَبِي أَوْفَى " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ حَرْبٍ وَغَيْرِهِ، وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ.
Amr bin Murrah says: I heard Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the people of Bay'at al-Ridwan, (say) that when people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with their charity, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: 'Allahumma salli 'alayhim' (O Allah, send Your mercy upon them). My respected father came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) with his zakah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma salli 'ala ali Abi Awfa' (O Allah, send mercy upon the family of Abu Awfa).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ نُبَيْحٍ الْعَنَزِيِّ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً قَالَتْ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: صَلِّ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى زَوْجِي، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " صَلَّى الله عَلَيْكِ وَعَلَى زَوْجِكِ ".
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that a woman said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Pray for blessings for me and for my husband. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Sallallahu 'alayki wa 'ala zawjik' (May Allah send His mercy upon you and upon your husband).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، وَأَبُو عُثْمَانَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ قَالُوا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ الْعُطَارِدِيُّ، ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: " مَا يَنْبَغِي الصَّلَاةُ مِنْ أَحَدٍ عَلَى أَحَدٍ إِلَّا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " قَالَ الشَّيْخُ: يُرِيدُ بِهِ الصَّلَاةَ الَّتِي هِيَ تَحِيَّةٌ لَذِكْرِهِ عَلَى وَجْهِ التَّعْظِيمِ، فَأَمَّا صَلَاتُهُ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ فَإِنَّهَا كَانَتْ بِمَعْنَى الدُّعَاءِ وَالتَّبْرِيكِ وَتِلْكَ جَائِزَةٌ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ.
(a) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that it is not permissible for anyone to send salah (blessings) upon anyone else except upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By salah, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) meant the special salutation that is recited along with his name; this was because of the greatness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). As for salah upon anyone other than him, it is in the sense of supplication and blessing, and that is permissible for others besides the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By salah, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) meant the special salutation that is recited along with his name; this was because of the greatness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). As for salah upon anyone other than him, it is in the sense of supplication and blessing, and that is permissible for others besides the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
