أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ مِنْ أَصْلِ كِتَابِهِ ثنا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، ثنا مَالِكٌ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الْقَاضِي، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ الْوَرَّاقُ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ: قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمُجْمِرِ، أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ، وَعَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ زَيْدٍ، هُوَ الَّذِي كَانَ أُرِيَ النِّدَاءَ بِالصَّلَاةِ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ: أَمَرَنَا اللهُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ: فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: قُولُوا: " اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، وَالسَّلَامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ " لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى، رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the gathering of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Bashir bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Allah has commanded us to send blessings upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, and we thought it would have been better if Bashir bin Sa'd had not asked him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahim, wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima fil-'alamin, innaka Hamidun Majid' (O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon his family, just as You sent down Your mercy upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him); and send down blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon his family, just as You sent down blessings upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) among all the worlds. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious)." Then he said: "And the salam is as you already know."
Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) has also recorded this narration in his Sahih, but in it are the words 'kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim' (just as You sent down blessings upon Ibrahim).

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ مِنْ أَصْلِهِ أنبأ أَبُو حَامِدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ بِلَالٍ الْبَزَّازُ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى، ثنا الْإِمَامُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ وَكَتَبْتُهُ مِنْ أَصْلِهِ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي فِي الصَّلَاةِ، عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا الْمَرْءُ الْمُسْلِمُ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فِي صَلَاتِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، وَقَالَ: ⦗٢١٠⦘ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَمَّا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ إِذَا نَحْنُ صَلَّيْنَا عَلَيْكَ فِي صَلَاتِنَا صَلَّى الله عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ: فَصَمَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْنَا أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " إِذَا أَنْتُمْ صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَقُولُوا: اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ " لَفْظُهُمَا سَوَاءٌ قَالَ: أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ بِذِكْرِ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلَوَاتِ.
Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud Uqbah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and sat down in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then said: O Messenger of Allah, as for the salam, we know it, but how should we send blessings upon you in our prayer, may Allah send His mercy upon you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, until we wished that he had not asked at all. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you send blessings upon me (during the prayer), say: 'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin an-nabiyyil-ummiyyi wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, wa barik 'ala Muhammadin an-nabiyyil-ummiyyi wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid' (O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the unlettered Prophet, and send down Your mercy upon his family too, just as You sent down mercy upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and the family of Ibrahim; and send down blessing upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the unlettered Prophet, and send down mercy and blessings upon his family too, just as You sent down blessings upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are worthy of praise and Glorious)."
Abu Abdullah says: This hadith is sahih (authentic) concerning sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the prayers.

وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ هُوَ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ: هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ حَسَنٌ مُتَّصِلٌ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَقَدْ رُوِّي عَنْ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بِنَحْوِهِ.
A similar hadith is reported through another chain, which Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated with his own chain.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْأَسَدِيُّ، أنبأ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، ثنا الْحَكَمُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى يَقُولُ: لَقِيَنِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ فَقَالَ: لِي: أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟، فَقَالَ: " قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ آدَمَ، وَقَالَ: كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ كَذَلِكَ، وَقَوْلُهُ فِي الْحَدِيثِ: قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ، إِشَارَةً إِلَى السَّلَامِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي التَّشَهُّدِ، فَقَوْلُهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ أَيْضًا يَكُونُ الْمُرَادُ بِهِ فِي الْقُعُودِ لِلتَّشَهُّدِ.
(a) Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) met me and said: Shall I not give you a gift? Then he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and we said to him: O Messenger of Allah, we have come to know how to send salam upon you, but tell us how we should send blessings upon you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid' (O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon his family, just as You sent mercy upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him); indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, send down blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon the family of Muhammad too, just as You sent down blessings upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him); indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious)."
(b) In al-Bukhari there are the words 'kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim' (just as You sent down blessings upon Ibrahim).
(c) The words of the hadith "we have come to know how to send salam upon you" refer to sending salam upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the tashahhud, and likewise the Companion's words "so how should we send blessings upon you" were also a question about the blessings in the tashahhud.
(b) In al-Bukhari there are the words 'kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim' (just as You sent down blessings upon Ibrahim).

وَقَدْ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، أنبأ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، أنبأ الشَّافِعِيُّ، أنبأ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعْدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ ⦗٢١١⦘ فِي الصَّلَاةِ: " اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite in the prayer: 'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid' (O Allah, send down Your mercy upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon the family of Muhammad too, just as You sent down mercy upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and the family of Ibrahim; and send down blessing upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon his family, just as You sent down blessing upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا ابْنُ مِلْحَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَبَّابٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَالَ: قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا السَّلَامُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ: " قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ " وَفِي هَذَا أَيْضًا إِشَارَةٌ إِلَى مَا أَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ حَدِيثُ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ، عَنِ اللَّيْثِ.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the salam we know, but how should we send blessings upon you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who is Your servant and Messenger, just as You sent down mercy upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him); and send down blessing upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), just as You sent down blessing upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him)."
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بَكْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّيْرَفِيُّ بِمَرْوَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ، ثنا حَيْوَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي هَانِئٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى رَجُلًا صَلَّى لَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللهَ وَلَمْ يُمَجِّدْهُ وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَانْصَرَفَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " عَجِلَ هَذَا " فَدَعَاهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ وَلِغَيْرِهِ: " إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَبْدَأْ بِتَحْمِيدِ رَبِّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَالثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْهِ وَلْيُصَلِّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ يَدْعُو بِمَا شَاءَ ".
Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man who neither declared the greatness of Allah nor sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then finished his prayer with the salam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This man has been hasty." Then he called him and said to him, or to someone else: "When one of you prays, let him first declare the greatness and majesty of Allah Almighty, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then after that let him supplicate with whatever he wishes."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مَنْصُورٍ الظَّفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْعَلَوِيُّ، وَأَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ دُحَيْمٍ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَازِمِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ الْغِفَارِيُّ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ: " كُنَّا إِذَا جَلَسْنَا بَيْنَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ، إِلَّا أَنْ نُسَبِّحَ وَنُكَبِّرَ وَنَذْكُرَ اللهَ، وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عُلِّمَ جَوَامِعَ الْخَيْرِ وَفَوَاتِحَهُ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ، فَقَالَ: " إِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ بَيْنَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ " قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: وَإِذَا قَالَ: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَقَدْ ⦗٢١٢⦘ أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ أَوْ نَبِيٍّ مُرْسَلٍ، ثُمَّ يُبْتَدَأُ بِالثَّنَاءِ عَلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَالْمَدْحَةِ لَهُ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ وَبِالصَّلَاةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ يَسْأَلُ بَعْدُ ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In the beginning, when we sat between the two rak'ahs, we would say tasbih and takbir and remember Allah because we did not know (what to say). Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) knew the best of words. He turned towards us and said: "When you sit between the two rak'ahs, say: 'All verbal, practical and financial acts of worship are for Allah alone. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.'" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When a person says 'As-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin' (Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah), that salam reaches every righteous servant, or he said: every Prophet sent as a Messenger. Then let him begin with the praise of Allah and extol and praise Allah as He deserves, then send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then after that ask Allah for whatever he wishes.
