Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would say at the time of the salam: Peace be upon Allah before His servants, peace be upon Jibril and Mika'il (peace be upon them), peace be upon so-and-so, peace be upon so-and-so. One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: "Allah Almighty is Himself al-Salam (the Source of Peace). When one of you prays, let him say: 'At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu alayna wa ala ibadillahis-salihin' (All acts of worship, prayers and glorifications are for Allah; peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah). When you say these words, your greeting will reach every righteous servant of Allah wherever he is in the heavens and the earth. 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): Before the tashahhud was made obligatory, we used to say: 'As-salamu alallah, as-salamu ala Jibrila wa Mika'il' (Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril and Mika'il). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say it like this, for Allah Almighty is Himself al-Salam. Rather say: 'At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu alayna wa ala ibadillahis-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh' (All acts of worship, prayers and glorifications are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and His mercy and blessings, and peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger)."
Ali (bin Umar al-Daraqutni) said: This chain is sahih (authentic).

Abu Ma'mar Abdullah bin Sakhbarah said: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me the tashahhud with my hand between his (peace and blessings be upon him) hands, just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach a surah of the Qur'an: 'At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu alayna wa ala ibadillahis-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh' (All verbal, physical and financial acts of worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger). That was while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us; when he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, we said: 'As-salamu alan-Nabiyy' (Peace be upon the Prophet).

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح۔ وله شاهد قوي عند عبدالرزاق فتح الباري 831»
(a) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning the tashahhud that he said: "All verbal, physical and financial acts of worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah too." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I added 'wa barakatuh' (and His blessings) to it. "Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I added 'wahdahu la sharika lah' (alone, without any partner) to it. "And I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger."
(b) Ibn Abi Adi narrated this from Shu'bah. He narrated it as mawquf (stopping at the Companion) and said: In his (peace and blessings be upon him) lifetime we used to say: 'As-salamu alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullah' (Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah). When he passed away, we began to say: 'As-salamu alan-Nabiyyi wa rahmatullah' (Peace be upon the Prophet and the mercy of Allah).
In another narration reported from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), 'lillah' (for Allah) comes later, that is: 'At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat' (All verbal, physical and financial acts of worship are for Allah), and it also has the addition of 'wa barakatuh'.
Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari held that the narration of Sayf from Mujahid from Abu Ma'mar from Abdullah bin Mas'ud is the preserved one (mahfuz), rather than the narration of Abu Bishr. And Allah Almighty knows best.

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح۔ قال الدار قطني هذا اسناد صحيح»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the imam is (sitting) in the sitting posture in the last rak'ah of his prayer, and his ablution is broken before he recites the tashahhud, his prayer is complete."
This is a weak hadith.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 2822
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man loses his ablution at the end of his prayer, after raising his head from the (last) prostration and before giving the salam, his prayer is valid."
It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Ziyad: When the imam has sat (in the last sitting) and then loses his ablution before giving the salam, his prayer is complete.
Mu'adh bin al-Hakam narrated this same narration from Abd al-Rahman bin Ziyad and added in it: 'wa qada fihi tashahhudah' (having completed the tashahhud in it).
Abd al-Rahman bin Ziyad is al-Ifriqi; Yahya al-Qattan, Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Yahya bin Ma'in and other imams of hadith declared him da'if (weak). There is also disagreement over this narration from him, and it is mentioned with its defects in Kitab al-Khilaf.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 2823
(a) Hamalah bin Abd al-Rahman said: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say: There is no prayer without the tashahhud.
(b) It is reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): There is no prayer without the tashahhud.
As for what is narrated from Asim bin Damrah from Ali as his own saying, that if he has sat for the length of the tashahhud and then loses his ablution his prayer is complete, it is not sahih (authentic), and Asim bin Damrah is not used as evidence.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 2824
Ali bin Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) about a person who omits the tashahhud, and he said: "He should repeat the prayer." I said: What is your view of the hadith of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that is, 'man qa'ada miqdar al-tashahhud' (whoever sat for the length of the tashahhud)? He said: "That hadith is not sahih (authentic)."
