It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) led them in prayer. Every time he went down and every time he rose up he said 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest). Then, when he had finished with the salam, he said: By Allah! Of all of you, my prayer is the most like the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
In the narration of Yahya, instead of 'fa-idha insarafa' (and when he finished) it is 'fa-lamma insarafa' (then when he finished).

It is narrated from Ibn Shihab that Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith informed him that he heard Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for the prayer, he said the takbir when standing, then said the takbir while bowing, then said 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him) when straightening his back from the bowing, then, once standing upright, he said: 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd' (Our Lord, and to You belongs all praise). Then he said the takbir while going down into prostration, after that he said the takbir while raising his head from the prostration, and he did the same throughout the whole prayer until he completed it, and he also said the takbir when rising after the two rak'ahs.

It is narrated from Ali bin Husayn bin Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah have mercy on him) that whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went down or rose up, he would say the takbir. This remained his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer until he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed on to Allah.
It is a good (hasan) mursal report.

(a) Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman and Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on them both) say that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say the takbir in the obligatory prayer and in other prayers. When he stood up he said the takbir, then he said the takbir at the bowing, then before the prostration he said 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him) and 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd' (Our Lord, and to You belongs all praise). Then, while going down for the prostration, he said 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest); then, while raising his head from the prostration, he said 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest); then he said the takbir for the second prostration as well, and after that he would also say the takbir while rising from the second prostration. When rising from the sitting after two rak'ahs he also said 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest). He did this in every rak'ah until he finished the prayer. Once, after the salam, he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, of all of you I am the closest to the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This remained his prayer until he departed from this world."
(b) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This last statement is narrated by Imam Malik, al-Zubayri and others from al-Zuhri, from Ali bin Husayn.

It is narrated from Abu Salamah and Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman: We prayed behind Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he bowed he said the takbir, and when he raised his head from the bowing he said 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him) and 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd' (Our Lord, and to You belongs all praise). Then he prostrated and said 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), then he raised his head from the prostration and said the takbir again, then he said the takbir when rising after the two rak'ahs as well. Then he said: The prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained like this until he (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world.

It is narrated from Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him): I prayed behind an old man in Makkah. He said twenty-two takbirs in the Zuhr prayer. I went to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: I prayed behind a foolish old man, and he said twenty-two takbirs in the Zuhr prayer. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: May your mother be bereaved of you! This is the prayer of Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman al-Asamm: I asked Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about the takbir in the prayer, and he said: He would say the takbir when he bowed and when he prostrated, and when he raised his head from the prostration, and when he prostrated again, or when he rose after two rak'ahs, he would also say the takbir. Khatim asked him: From whom have you memorised this? He said: From the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with them both). Khatim said to him: And from Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) too? He said: Yes! From Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) too. The word is Khatim; some have also said Hatim.

(a) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abza narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say the takbir in full.
(b) In the narration of Amr, Sayyiduna Ibn Abd al-Rahman bin Abza narrates from his father that he prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say the takbir in full.
(c) Here it is also possible that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and he did not hear it, or it may be that he (peace and blessings be upon him) left it out once or twice to show that this is permissible.
