It is narrated from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the honoured wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sleeping before Isha, nor ever playing after it; either he would be engaged in remembrance (dhikr) and gain reward, or he would rest and be at peace.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked worldly talk after the Isha prayer.

It is narrated from Khaythamah (may Allah have mercy on him), from someone who heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Worldly conversation after the Isha prayer is not permissible, except that the one who prays and the traveller may talk about what they need."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After the Isha prayer it is not proper for anyone to converse except the one who prays and the traveller."
Hammad narrated it from Shu'ayb, from Mansur, from Khaythamah, from al-Aswad, from Abdullah, and he erred in it; it was also said: from Alqamah, from Abdullah, and that is an error.

It is narrated from Alqamah that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) at Arafah and said: O Commander of the Believers! I have come to you from Kufah, and there I met a man who dictates the copies of the Qur'an from memory. Hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and swelled up, until he almost filled the space between the man's two sides. Then he said: Woe to you, who is he? He said: Abdullah bin Mas'ud. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (on hearing this) seemed to cool down and his anger went away, until he returned to his former state. Then he said: By Allah! I do not know of anyone left among the Muslims more entitled to this than Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). I will tell you about him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to talk late into the night at the house of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about the affairs of the Muslims. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) was talking with him after Isha and I happened to be there too. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and we went out with him. We saw a man standing in the mosque, offering prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began listening to his recitation. Then, as we tried to recognize the man, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an fresh, as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of the son of Umm Abd (Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him))." Then he (Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)) sat down and began to supplicate, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began saying to him: "Ask and you will be given." After that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the morning I will go to Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and give him the glad tidings. (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: In the morning I went to give him the glad tidings and found that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) had got there before me and had already given Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) the glad tidings. By Allah! I never once tried to get ahead of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in any good deed but he always got there before me.
A group narrated this from al-A'mash, and it contains evidence that the narration about night conversation is reported from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), not from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), in the version that Alqamah transmitted.

It is narrated from Alqamah that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I have come from a man who dictates the copies of the Qur'an from memory; then he mentioned the long hadith. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you about Abdullah. One night we were talking in the house of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about some matter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he mentioned the complete hadith in the same way.
(b) At its end it also has that Muhammad al-Attar said to al-A'mash: Did Khaythamah not say that the name of the man (who came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) was Qays bin Marwan? He said: Yes; he meant the man who came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Alqamah did not hear this hadith from Qays from Umar; rather he narrated it from al-Qartha', from Qays, from Umar.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was reciting (the Qur'an), and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he mentioned the whole story, except that he did not mention the talking after Isha.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that one night we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we talked a great deal. Then we returned to our homes, and in the morning, when we woke, we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All the prophets were presented to me together with their nations, and their followers as well." Then he mentioned the long hadith.

(a) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Isha prayer in the last days of his life. When he had finished the prayer, he stood up and said: "What do you think of this night of yours?" Then he said: "By the end of a hundred years, not one of the people who are on the earth (today) will remain alive."
(b) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: People misunderstood this statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so that they began to take something else from the hadiths that mention a hundred years, namely that the Hour would come after a hundred years, although that was not what he (peace and blessings be upon him) meant. Rather, the point was that none of the people present on this earth today would remain alive. By this he meant the end of that generation, that is, this era would pass away within a hundred years.
