It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Ummah will remain upon the (sound) fitrah as long as it does not delay Maghrib until the stars come out."
We have narrated earlier the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), and it has also been narrated as the hadith of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Basrah al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Asr prayer at al-Mukhammas. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This prayer (Asr) was presented to the nations before you too, but they neglected it; so whoever guards it will be given a double reward, and there is no prayer after it until the star al-shahid rises."
Ibn Bukayr said: I asked al-Layth about al-shahid and he said: It is a star.
It is not permissible to abandon the sahih and well-known hadiths because of this hadith. It is not meant to state the time of Maghrib; rather, what is intended here is the negation of voluntary prayers after Asr.
