It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) would give the adhan when the sun had passed the meridian, then he would not stand for the iqamah until he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); when he saw him (peace and blessings be upon him), he would give the iqamah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Malik bin al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him): I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a group of my people, and we stayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him) for twenty days. He was very merciful and gentle. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw our longing for our families, he said: "Go back and stay among them, teach them and pray. When the time of prayer comes, let one of you give the adhan, and let the eldest of you lead you in prayer."

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The adhan is not given for any prayer other than the morning prayer except after its time has come in, because I do not know of anyone who has related from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he gave the adhan for any prayer before its time other than Fajr; and we have not seen our muezzins give the adhan except after the time of the prayer has come in, apart from the Fajr prayer.
