It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A ritual bath is taken for four things: for major impurity (janabah), on Friday, after washing a dead person, and after cupping."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1429
Mus'ab bin Shaybah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it with the same chain, except that he said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to take a bath for four things."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1430
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The ritual bath is for five things: for major impurity, for cupping, on Friday, after washing a dead person, and from the water of the bathhouse." (b) In Sahih Muslim it is reported from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ten things are part of the fitrah (natural disposition)." He (Muslim) did not record this previous hadith, and I think he left it out because of the criticism of some of the hadith masters (huffaz) regarding it. It has a supporting narration (shahid) from the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both), except that he did not mention taking a bath after washing a dead person.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1431
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both): "We used to take a bath for five things: after cupping, from the bathhouse, after plucking the armpit hair, for major impurity, and on Friday."
Al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I mentioned this to Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: "They did not consider any bath obligatory except that of major impurity, and they regarded the bath on Friday as recommended."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1432
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he took a bath after the bathhouse, for Friday, for major impurity, after cupping, and after using the razor.

Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1435
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a report with the same meaning. (b) Ibn Ulayyah narrates it from Suhayl both as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) and as mawquf (stopping at the Companion).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1436
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For washing him there is a bath, and for carrying him there is ablution," meaning the dead person and the bier.
That is how he narrated it, and I do not think he preserved it accurately.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For washing him there is a bath, and for carrying him there is ablution." (b) Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "If I had known that he was impure, I would never have touched him." (That is, in his view the dead person is not impure.)

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates like the previous report: "Whoever washes a dead person, let him take a bath, and whoever carries him, let him perform ablution."
Al-Bukhari regarded the version reported as Abu Hurayrah's own words as more likely, and he said: Ibn Hanbal and Ali said: Nothing in this chapter is authentic.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1439
(a) Imam Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) when he was asked about taking a bath after washing a dead person; he said: "Ablution suffices him." (b) This hadith of Mus'ab is weak (da'if); it contains some matters that are not acted upon. (c) The Shaykh said: Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about this hadith, and he said that Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal and Ali bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on them both) said: "Nothing in this chapter is authentic." Imam Muhammad (al-Bukhari) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The hadith of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is not fit to be used as evidence."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1440
(a) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: What prevented me from acting on the hadith making a bath obligatory after washing a dead person is that there is a narrator in its chain about whom, to this day, I have not obtained knowledge that would satisfy me. If I found someone reliable (to satisfy me), I would declare it obligatory, and I would declare ablution due upon whoever touches the dead person.
(b) Abu Bakr al-Mutarriz said: I heard Muhammad bin Yahya (may Allah have mercy on him) say: "I do not know of any established hadith concerning taking a bath after washing a dead person; if it were established, we would be bound to act on it." (c) Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has been reported as marfu' from Abu Salamah through a weak chain.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever washes a dead person, let him take a bath," and the wording of al-Hafiz's narration is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For washing the dead person there is a bath, and for carrying him there is ablution." (b) Ibn Lahi'ah and Hunayn bin Abi Hakim are not used as evidence. What is preserved (mahfuz) from the hadith of Abu Salamah is what Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) pointed to: that it is mawquf, the words of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1442
(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whoever washes a dead person, let him take a bath; whoever carries a dead person, let him perform ablution; and whoever walks with it (the funeral), let him not sit until it has been buried." (b) The Shaykh said: This report is authentically established as mawquf from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), as Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) also indicated. The same report has also been narrated as marfu' through another chain.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever washes a dead person, let him take a bath, and whoever carries him, let him perform ablution." (b) Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the people of Sham narrated munkar (objectionable) reports from Zuhayr bin Muhammad. Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Zuhayr is not strong. It has been narrated as marfu' from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) through another chain.

(b) This is the well-known version of the hadith of Ibn Abi Dhi'b, but Salih, the freed slave of al-Taw'amah, in it is not strong.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever carries him should perform ablution (wudu)." (b) Layth said: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reached us, and it was mentioned to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: What the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) meant is that no one should attend the funeral except a person in a state of ablution. (c) The Shaykh said: This narration has been reported through another chain from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), but that chain is weak.

(b) The Shaykh said: All the marfu' narrations in this chapter from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) are not strong, because some of their narrators are unknown and some are weak, and they are authentic as mawquf (his own statement).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whoever washes the deceased should take a ritual bath (ghusl), and whoever lowers him into his grave should perform ablution (wudu)." And a statement of the same meaning has been reported from Ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1449
Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Taking a ritual bath after washing the deceased is Sunnah, and being in a state of ablution while lowering him into the grave until he is buried is also Sunnah. Apart from that, ablution is not required of anyone: neither of the one who offers his funeral prayer, nor of the one who carries his bier, nor of the one who walks with it. The statement of Ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) has already passed: "If I knew that it was impure (najas), I would never touch it" (that is, in his view the deceased is not impure).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever washes a deceased person should take a ritual bath (ghusl)." (b) Imam Ali bin al-Madini (may Allah have mercy on him) said: No hadith is established on this subject. (c) The Shaykh said: The well-known narration is reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Abu Bakr bin Ishaq al-Faqih said: The report of Abu Ishaq from his father from Hudhayfah is saqit (discarded).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1451
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Abu Talib died, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, your misguided uncle has died. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and conceal him in a pit." I said: I will not conceal him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will conceal him? Go and conceal him, and do not say anything to anyone, then come to me." So I went and concealed his body. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to take a ritual bath, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for me, and I was so pleased with that supplication that nothing on earth had ever pleased me as much. (b) The trustworthiness ('adalah) of Najiyah bin Ka'b al-Asadi is not established with Imam Bukhari and Muslim, nor are the words "that he washed him" (established). (c) Imam Ali bin al-Madini said: The hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to conceal Abu Talib, we found only with the people of Kufah, and there is something objectionable in its chain. Abu Ishaq narrated it from Najiyah, and we do not know of anyone other than Abu Ishaq who narrated from Najiyah. (d) Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This same narration has been reported in the same way from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) through a weak chain.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1452
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Abu Talib died, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, your elderly uncle has died. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go and conceal him, and do not say anything to anyone, then come to me." I took a ritual bath, then came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for me with a supplication that was dearer to me than red camels.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1453
Sa'id narrated it with the same chain in the same way, and added: "the red camels and their black ones." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), whenever he washed a deceased person, would take a ritual bath.
Al-Hasan bin Yazid al-Asamm is alone in narrating it with this chain. Ibn Adi said: Al-Hasan bin Yazid al-Kufi is not strong, and his narration from al-Suddi is not preserved; this well-known hadith revolves around Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i from Najiyah bin Ka'b from Ali.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1454
The Shaykh said: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the death of Abu Talib. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and wash him, and do not say anything to anyone; come to me." I washed him and concealed him, then I came to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and take a ritual bath." (b) This narration is munkar (denounced); it has no basis. (c) Ali bin Abi Ali al-Lihbi is weak; Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) criticised him. It is reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) through another chain, and its chain is weak.
It has also been reported from Ali as his own statement, and that is not strong.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1455
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Abu Talib died, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, the misguided old man has died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go, wash him and shroud him." I said: O Messenger of Allah, me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who has more right to it than you? Go, wash him, shroud him and bury him, and do not say anything to anyone until you come to me." So I went and did it. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and take a bath like the ritual bath for major impurity (janabah)."
This is an error; the well-known version is from Abu Ishaq from Najiyah from Ali, as has preceded. Salih bin Muqatil bin Salih narrates munkar (denounced) reports.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "A ritual bath is not obligatory upon you for washing your deceased, once you have washed him. Your deceased is a pure believer, not impure; it is sufficient for you to wash your hands."
This has also been narrated as marfu' (from the Prophet), but its being marfu' is not authentic.

This is weak, and the blame for it lies, I think, with Abu Shaybah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not call your dead impure, for a Muslim is not impure, whether alive or dead."
