Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: We were in the sand, and among us were menstruating women, people in a state of janabah and women in postnatal bleeding. Four months would pass over us in which we found no water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold to the earth," meaning perform tayammum.
(b) In this hadith the narrator al-Muthanna is not strong. (c) Al-Hajjaj bin Artah narrated this report, with a difference only in the chain, namely "from Amr, from his father, from his grandfather". In it the question is about a man who has no water: may he have intercourse with his wife? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that some Bedouins came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We live in a sandy region; we have no access to water, nor do we find water for three or four months (Abu al-Rabi' was in doubt), and among us are women in postnatal bleeding, menstruating women and people in a state of janabah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold to the earth (soil)."

Ali (bin Abdullah) said: I said to Sufyan: Abu al-Rabi' narrated from Amr bin Dinar, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), concerning a man who stays far away (from water) with his camels. Sufyan said: Only al-Muthanna bin al-Sabbah brought this, from Amr bin Shu'ayb; Amr bin Dinar only said: I heard Jabir bin Zayd saying it. Ali said: I said to Sufyan: Shu'bah narrated it in this way from Jabir (bin Zayd). He said: Shu'bah was among the people of memorisation and truthfulness, and he was not one who sought falsehood. (c) The Shaykh said: It has also been narrated from Ibn Abi Arubah, from Amr bin Dinar, from Ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, whereas Ibn Abi Arubah only heard it from Abu al-Rabi', from Amr; and it has been narrated through another weak route.
