Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) heard his son saying: O Allah, I ask You for the white palace on the right side of Paradise when I enter it. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O my son, ask Allah for Paradise and seek refuge with Him from the Fire, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Soon there will be people in my Ummah who will transgress the limits in ablution and in supplication."

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, ablution too has a devil who is called al-Walhan, so beware of him," or he said: "Fear him."
(b) In one narration it says: "Beware of him, and fear the whispering (waswasah) of water."

Abu Dawud narrated it in the same way, (b) and he said that in its chain there is Utay bin Damrah; and this hadith is ma'lul (defective) because of al-Thawri's narration of it from al-Hasan: part of it is not marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), and the remaining part, from Yunus bin Ubayd, is also not marfu'. Wallahu a'lam (Allah knows best).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 949
(a) It is narrated from al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him): "Ablution has a devil who is called al-Walhan"; he makes people laugh during ablution.
(b) Yunus (may Allah have mercy on him) said that water has a whispering, so: "Beware of the whispering of water."
(c) Hilal bin Yasaf (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "There is extravagance in everything, even in ablution, even if one is on the bank of a river."
(d) Likewise, others besides Kharijah bin Mus'ab have narrated it from al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) and Yunus bin Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him). Kharijah is alone in narrating it with his chain, and he is not strong in narration. Allah knows best.
It has also been narrated with another, weak chain from Imran bin Husayn as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), meaning what we have narrated from Yunus bin Ubayd.
