أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِلَالِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ، قَالَ: وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَمْرِو بْنُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ، وَاللَّفْظُ ⦗٣٠٢⦘ لَهُ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ عِرَاكٍ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، وَكَانَتْ تَحْتَ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، أَخْبَرَتْهَا أَنَّهَا " كَانَتْ تَغْتَسِلُ هِيَ وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ يَسَعُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَمْدَادٍ وَقَرِيبًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ ". رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that she and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to bathe from a single vessel which held three mudd of water or close to that.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ الْمُحَمَّدَآبَاذِيُّ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الْعَدَنِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ طَهْمَانَ، ثنا أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ الْمَكِّيُّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ الْمَكِّيِّ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: بَلَغَ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو يُفْتِي أَنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ تَنْقُضُ رَأْسَهَا عِنْدَ غُسْلِ الْجَنَابَةِ فَقَالَتْ: " لَقَدْ كَلَّفَ النِّسَاءَ تَعَبًا وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَغْتَسِلُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ هَذَا، وَإِذَا تَوْرٌ مَوْضُوعٌ مِثْلُ الصَّاعِ أَوْ دُونَهُ فَأُفِيضُ عَلَى رَأْسِي ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ جَمِيعًا ".
Ubayd bin Umayr al-Makki said that it reached Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) was giving the legal verdict that a woman should undo her hair at the time of the ritual bath for major ritual impurity. Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: He has put women to hardship, whereas the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and I used to bathe from this; there was a vessel placed there like a sa' or less, and I would pour water over my head three times.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا ابْنُ بَشَّارٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ حَبِيبٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ، عَنْ جَدَّتِي وَهِيَ أُمُّ عُمَارَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " تَوَضَّأَ فَأُتِيَ بِإِنَاءٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ قَدْرَ ثُلُثَيِ الْمُدِّ " هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ غُنْدَرٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، وَخَالَفَهُ غَيْرُهُ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ.
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Umarah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, and a vessel was brought to him (peace and blessings be upon him) containing water about two thirds of a mudd.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى الرَّازِيُّ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أُتِيَ بِثُلُثَيْ مُدٍّ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَجَعَلَ يَدْلُكُ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that two thirds of a mudd of water was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and was rubbing his forearms.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عُمَرَ الْمُقْرِئُ بِبَغْدَادَ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلْمَانَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، ثنا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْأَحْمَرُ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، " تَوَضَّأَ بِنَحْو مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ الْمُدِّ ". وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ مُعَاذُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، قَالَ أَبُو زُرْعَةَ الرَّازِيُّ: الصَّحِيحُ عِنْدِي حَدِيثُ غُنْدَرٍ.
It is narrated from Ibn Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with about two thirds of a mudd (of water).
Abu Zur'ah al-Razi said: In my view, the correct one is the hadith of Ghundar.

وَرُوِيَ، عَنِ الصَّلْتِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، أَنَّ ⦗٣٠٣⦘ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " تَوَضَّأَ بِنِصْفِ مُدٍّ ". أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ، أَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَغَوِيُّ، ثنا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ الْجَزَرِيُّ، عَنِ الصَّلْتِ، فَذَكَرَهُ. وَالصَّلْتُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ مَتْرُوكٌ، لَا يُفْرَحُ بِحَدِيثِهِ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْهُ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى: بِقِسْطٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ.
(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with half a mudd (of water). (b) The hadith of al-Salt bin Dinar is not accepted as proof. (c) The wording of another narration is: 'with a qist of water'.
أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو حَازِمٍ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْحَافِظُ، أنا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثنا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِإِسْنَادِهِ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ الْمَالِينِيِّ وَزَادَ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى: " بِقِسْطٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ " وَقَدْ قِيلَ عَنْهُ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ بِأَقَلَّ مِنْ مُدٍّ،.
Surayj bin Yunus narrated it with the same chain, like the hadith of al-Malini, and made an addition, and once he said: "With a measure of water." In this hadith, less than a mudd has also been mentioned.
أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ النَّاقِدُ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي مَذْعُورٍ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ الْجَزَرِيُّ، عَنِ الصَّلْتِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِإِسْنَادِهِ.
Al-Salt bin Dinar narrated it with the same chain.
