It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman asked about the ritual bath after menstruation, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed her how she should bathe. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take a piece (of cloth) with musk and purify yourself with it." She said: How should I purify myself with it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Purify yourself with it." She said: How should I purify myself with it? He said: "Then cover yourself," meaning like this, and Sa'dan illustrated it with his four fingers. And (Sufyan) said that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah)! Purify yourself with it." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I pulled her towards me and said: Apply it to the traces of blood.

Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "No woman should mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she mourns for four months and ten days. She should not wear dyed clothing, except garments of 'asb (a Yemeni cloth), nor apply kohl, nor apply henna, nor touch perfume, except at the time of her purification: when she becomes pure from her menstruation, she may use a little qust and azfar (kinds of incense)."

Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "We were forbidden to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for a husband, four months and ten days; during that time we would not apply kohl, nor wear perfume, nor wear dyed clothing, except garments of 'asb. And a concession was given at the time of purification: when one of us took the ritual bath after her menstruation, she could use 'a little qust and azfar' (kinds of incense)."
