Allah Almighty says: "Or you have touched women." [Surah al-Nisa: 43]
The word lams (touching) also applies to acts other than intercourse, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): "Perhaps you kissed or touched."
And there is his (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibition of mulamasah (a sale concluded by touching),
and in some narrations of the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) there is his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "And the zina of the hand is touching."
And there is the statement of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Rarely did a day pass without the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) coming to all of us; he (peace and blessings be upon him) would kiss and touch, short of intercourse."
All these hadiths have been recorded with their chains in their respective places.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A kiss is a form of touching, and ablution is due because of it; and lams (touching) is what is short of intercourse.

(a) Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that a man's kissing his wife and touching her body with his hand are part of mulamasah (touching), and whoever kisses his wife or touches her with his hand must perform ablution.
(b) In the narration of Ibn Bukayr the wording is: ablution becomes obligatory upon him.
(c) This is the view of Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) differed from them: he interpreted the mulamasah mentioned in the Book of Allah as intercourse, and he did not hold that kissing requires ablution.

Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We discussed lams (touching). Some people among the mawali (non-Arab clients) said: It is not intercourse, and the Arabs said: It is intercourse. I mentioned this to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said: Which of them were you with? I said: With the mawali. He said: The mawali are mistaken. Indeed, touching and mubasharah (intimate contact) are intercourse, but Allah Almighty alludes to whatever He wills by whatever He wills. Their view is more worthy, being in agreement with the apparent meaning of the Book.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a man who was intimate with a woman who is not lawful for him, and did everything except intercourse? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him perform ablution well, then stand and pray." Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night" [Surah Hud: 114]. It was asked: Is this specific to him or general for all Muslims? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it is for all Muslims."
Its chain is mursal (broken): Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla did not meet Mu'adh bin Jabal.
