(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell asleep in his prostration and sleep overcame him, until the sound of snoring could be heard. I said: O Messenger of Allah, you fell asleep. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ablution is due upon one who sleeps on his side, and whoever lays down his side (that is, lies down), his joints become relaxed."
(b) Some narrated in the hadith: "Ablution is due upon one who sleeps lying down; indeed, whoever lies down, his joints become relaxed."

Hadith Takhrij«ضعيف۔ أخرجه الطبراني في الكبير 12748»
(a) Abd al-Salam bin Harb narrates with the same chain that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever falls asleep sitting, standing or in prostration, ablution is not due upon him until he lays down his side (that is, lies down); when he lays down his side, his joints become relaxed."
Only Yazid bin Abd al-Rahman Abu Khalid al-Dalani narrated this hadith in this form.
(b) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My eyes sleep, but my heart does not sleep."
(c) Imam Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about this hadith, and he said: This is nothing. Sa'id bin Abi Arubah narrated it from Qatadah from Ibn Abbas as his own statement, without mentioning Abu al-Aliyah, and I do not know that Abu Khalid al-Dalani heard anything from Qatadah.
(d) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the narrator's words 'ablution is due upon one who sleeps lying down' are munkar (rejected); only Yazid al-Dalani narrated it from Qatadah.
(e) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Shu'bah said: Qatadah heard only four hadiths from Abu al-Aliyah: the hadith of Yunus bin Matta, the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the prayer, the hadith 'Judges are of three kinds', and the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) 'There is no prayer after Asr'. The Shaykh says: He also heard the narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about what is to be said at a time of distress, and his narration about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seeing Musa (peace be upon him) and others on the night of the Night Journey.
(f) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I mentioned the hadith of Yazid al-Dalani to Ahmad bin Hanbal, and he said: What business has Yazid al-Dalani intruding among the students of Qatadah? The Shaykh says: By this Ahmad meant what al-Bukhari mentioned, that Abu Khalid al-Dalani is not known to have heard from Qatadah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept until the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) snoring could be heard. He (peace and blessings be upon him) got up, then prayed and did not perform ablution. Ikrimah said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was protected.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept until he (peace and blessings be upon him) snored, then got up, prayed and did not perform ablution.
(b) Likewise is the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about spending the night, in which this addition does not occur.
(c) His (peace and blessings be upon him) sleep was while lying down, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform ablution; this was something specific to him, as this hadith indicates.
Abu Khalid al-Dalani alone narrated that addition.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I stayed one night with my maternal aunt, Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). When part of the night had passed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a light ablution from a hanging water-skin (Amr described it as light and very little). Then he stood up to pray, so I also got up. I performed ablution just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had performed ablution, then I stood on his (peace and blessings be upon him) left side, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned me around and placed me on his right. Then he prayed as much as Allah willed, then he lay down and slept until he snored. Then the caller came and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) about the prayer.
On another occasion Sufyan narrated: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for the prayer and led us in prayer, but did not perform ablution.
Sufyan said: We said to Amr: People say, "The eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sleep but his heart does not sleep." Amr said: I heard Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) say: The dreams of the prophets are revelation, and as evidence he recited this verse: "Indeed, I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you" [Surah al-Saffat: 102].
(b) In Bukhari and Muslim it is stated that Sufyan said: This was specific to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because a saying of his (peace and blessings be upon him) has reached us which is evidence for us that "his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep."

(a) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), mentioning the night prayer, said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, do you sleep before praying witr? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aishah, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep."
(b) Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that his eyes would sleep but his heart would not sleep, and likewise the eyes of all the prophets sleep but their hearts do not sleep.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There is no ablution upon one who sleeps sitting with his knees drawn up (ihtiba'), nor upon one who sleeps standing, nor upon one who sleeps in prostration, until he lies down; once he lies down, he must perform ablution (this is a mawquf report).
