Amr bin Yahya al-Mazini narrates from his father that a man said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him), the grandfather of Amr bin Yahya: "Can you show me how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes!" Then he called for water, poured it over his hands and washed them twice each, then rinsed his mouth and sniffed water into his nose three times, washed his face three times, then washed his arms up to and including the elbows twice, then wiped his head with both his hands, moving them from front to back and from back to front; that is, he began at the front of his head and took them to the nape, then brought them back to the place where he had started, then he washed his feet.

Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) performed ablution in front of the people, as he had seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution. When he reached his head, he took a handful of water, poured it onto his left hand, then placed it on the middle of his head until the water flowed, or nearly flowed. Then he wiped from the front part of his head to the back, and from the back to the front.
