It is narrated from Abu Sa'id, the freedman of al-Mahri, that hardship and distress befell them in Madinah. He came to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: I have a large family, and hardship has struck us; I want to move my family to some fertile countryside. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not do that; stay in Madinah. For we went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) — I think he said — until we came to Usfan. He stayed there for some nights, and the people said: By Allah, we are doing nothing here, while our families are left behind and we do not feel safe about them. That reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "What is this talk of yours that has reached me?" (The narrator said:) I do not know how he put it. He said: "By the One by whom I swear" — or: "By the One in whose hand is my soul — I have resolved," or: "I shall resolve" — I do not know which of the two he said — "to order my she-camel to be saddled, and then I will not untie a single knot of it until I reach Madinah." And he said: "O Allah, Ibrahim made Makkah sacred and made it a sanctuary. O Allah, I have made Madinah sacred, what lies between its two passes, that no blood is to be shed in it, no weapon is to be carried in it for fighting, and no tree's leaves are to be beaten down in it except for fodder. O Allah, bless us in our Madinah. O Allah, bless us in our sa'. O Allah, bless us in our mudd" — three times — "O Allah, place with the blessing two more blessings. By the One in whose hand is my soul, there is no mountain path or pass in Madinah except that two angels are guarding it until you return to it." Then he said to the people: "Set off." So we set off and came towards Madinah. By the One by whom we swear, or by whom an oath is sworn — Hammad was unsure of this one word only — we had not yet put down our saddles when we entered Madinah before Banu Abdullah bin Ghatafan raided it, though nothing had stirred them to it before that.
