Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I am ruined. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! What have you done?" He said: I have had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free a neck, that is, a slave." He said: I do not find one. He said: "Fast two consecutive months." He said: I do not have the strength for it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Feed sixty needy people." He said: I do not find (the means). A basket was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it and give it in charity." He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! To others besides my own family? By Allah, there is no one in Madinah poorer than me; and Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) says: between the two edges of Madinah there is no one poorer and more in need than me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled until the blessed teeth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became visible. Then he said: "Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah." Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A basket was brought containing fifteen sa' of dates.
Hiql says: It contained fifteen sa' of dates. Duhaym said: "Woe to you! What is that?" He said: I had intercourse with my wife in the month of Ramadan. A basket containing fifteen sa' of dates was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
