Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), on his way to Hajj, reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, he smelled perfume on Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: From whom is this perfume coming? He said: Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) applied this perfume to me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I adjure you by Allah to go back and have it washed off by her. By Allah! If I were to find the smell of tar on a muhrim, that would be dearer to me than finding the smell of perfume on him."
The Shaykh said: Perhaps the hadith of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had not reached him, and had it reached him, he would certainly have retracted it. It is also possible that he disliked it so that an ignorant person would not be misled into thinking that it is permissible for a muhrim to begin applying perfume, just as he said to Talhah regarding the garment dyed with red ochre. And Allah knows best.
