Bayhaqi 8747 — Adding Hajj to Umrah

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) set out during the time of the fitnah intending Umrah, and said: "If I am prevented from reaching the House, we will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did." So he set out, recited the talbiyah for Umrah and travelled on, until, when he climbed onto al-Bayda', he turned to his companions and said: "The matter of both is the same. I make you witnesses that I have made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with the Umrah." So he went on until he reached the House, performed tawaf of it, and went between Safa and Marwah seven times, adding nothing more to that, and he considered that sufficient for him, and he offered a sacrificial animal.
This is the hadith of Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) in the two Sahihs. Ubaydullah bin Umar and others narrated it from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) and added these words: He did not come out of ihram from either of them until he came out of ihram from both of them, with the Hajj, on the Day of Sacrifice. And his words "he added nothing more to that" mean that he performed sa'i between Safa and Marwah only once. And if someone recited the talbiyah for Hajj and then wished to add (Umrah) to it, Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said (regarding this): Most of the people I met and from whom I memorised (knowledge) used to say: That is not (permissible) for him. It has been narrated from some of the Successors, but I do not know whether it is established from any of the Companions or not. Likewise it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), but it is not established.
