Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the early part of the day when a group of people came, barefoot and with bare bodies, wrapped in sheets and with swords hanging from them. Most of them, rather all of them, were from the tribe of Mudar. I saw that the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was changing on seeing their state of starvation. He (peace and blessings be upon him) went in (to his house), then came out, then ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) (so he called the adhan) and he called the iqamah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the (Zuhr) prayer and delivered a sermon, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul" [Surah al-Nisa: 1], reciting it to the end. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O you who have believed, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow" [Surah al-Hashr: 18]. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man gave in charity from his dinar, another from his dirham, another from his garment, another from his sa' of wheat and another from his sa' of dates," until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "even if it is a piece of a date." The narrator says: A man from the Ansar came with a bag which his hand could almost not carry, indeed it could not. He presented the bag to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and then the people followed him in giving charity, until I saw that two heaps (of food and clothing) had formed, and I saw that the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was shining like gold. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever starts a good practice in Islam will have its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without anything being reduced from their rewards; and whoever starts an evil practice in Islam will bear its sin and the sin of those who act upon it after him, without anything being reduced from their sins."
The hadith of al-Nadr has the same meaning, except that al-Nadr did not mention that they were wearing cloaks ('aba'). Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated in his Sahih from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna that they were wearing striped sheets or cloaks and had swords hanging from them.
