Sufyan bin Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates with the same chain and meaning: "If there is no bint makhad, then an ibn labun (male) is to be taken in its place," and he did not mention the words of al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him).
Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said in Kitab al-'Ilal: I asked Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari about this hadith and he said: I hope that it is mahfuz (preserved), and Sufyan bin Husayn is saduq (truthful).
Abu Ahmad Abdullah bin Adi al-Hafiz said: Sulayman bin Kathir, the brother of Muhammad bin Kathir, agreed with Sufyan bin Husayn in narrating this hadith of the zakah dues from Salim from his father. He said: A group narrated it from al-Zuhri from Salim from his father as mawquf (stopping at the Companion), while Sufyan bin Husayn and Sulayman bin Kathir raised it as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
