Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray the Isha prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then go to his people, Banu Salimah, and lead them in prayer. One night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer, so Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him), then came to his people and led them in prayer, and he began Surah al-Baqarah. So a man separated from the congregation and prayed alone. When they had finished the prayer in the morning, they said: "O so-and-so! You have become a hypocrite." He said: "I have not become a hypocrite, but I will go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and tell him." He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed the Isha prayer with you (peace and blessings be upon him) last night, then he returned to us and began Surah al-Baqarah, so I separated and prayed my prayer. We are people who draw water and work with our hands." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Mu'adh! Are you one who puts people to trial? Recite such-and-such surahs."
