Bayhaqi 21014 — A man who does not attribute himself to singing

Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were with Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) on the road of Hajj, heading for Makkah. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) moved to one side of the road and said to Rabah bin al-Mughtarif (may Allah be pleased with him): Sing for us. He had a fine voice. While Rabah was singing to him, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), during his caliphate, caught up with them and asked: What is this? Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There is no harm in this; we amuse ourselves and shorten our journey. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you must memorise poetry, then memorise the verses of Dirar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Dirar was a man of the tribe of Banu Muharib bin Fihr.
