أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، قَالَ: قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ: بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ الشَّعْبِيَّ: كَانَ يَلْعَبُ بِالشِّطْرَنْجِ، وَيَلْبَسُ مِلْحَفَةً، وَيُرْخِي شَعْرَهُ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مُتَوَارِيًا مِنَ الْحَجَّاجِ ".
Ma'mar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It reached me that al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) used to play chess, wrap himself in a woman's sheet and let his hair hang down; that was because he was in hiding from al-Hajjaj.
