Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Farisi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I read in some books that Yazid bin Mu'awiyah asked al-Ahnaf bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) about muru'ah (honourable conduct), and al-Ahnaf (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It means piety and forbearance. Then, after a short while, he recited this verse: "When a handsome man does not do handsome deeds, there is no good in his beauty, nor in the young man's character, except piety." Yazid said: "Excellent, O Abu Bahr! It has matched the sea." Al-Ahnaf (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Why did you not say: the meaning has matched the explanation?"
