It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was a man from the Children of Israel who used to lend to people when one came to him with a guarantor (wakil)." He mentioned the hadith, and in it is: "The one who owed the money went and, when the term fell due, hollowed out a piece of wood, placed the money inside it, and wrote him a letter: 'From so-and-so to so-and-so: I have handed your money to my agent who took responsibility for me.'"
