Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Since Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it because of the desert people who had come, and then said: "Eat, give in charity, and store," and Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated what we have mentioned, it is incumbent on whoever knows both matters together to say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it for a particular reason, so when a similar situation occurs it is forbidden, and when it does not, it is not forbidden; or to say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it at one time and then permitted it afterwards, and the later of his commands abrogates the earlier.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said in another place: It seems that the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibition of keeping the meat of sacrifices beyond three days, when the desert people had come, was in the sense of what is preferable and not in the sense of an obligation, because Allah Almighty says concerning the sacrificial camels: "Then when they have fallen on their sides, eat of them and feed others" [Surah al-Hajj: 36], and this verse concerns the camels that their owners offer voluntarily.
