Abu al-Safar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man of Quraysh broke the tooth of a man of the Ansar. He went to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Ansari said: This man broke my tooth. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Not at all; we will satisfy you. The Ansari kept pressing Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and persisted until he wearied him, so he said: Do as you wish with your man. Then Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), who was sitting with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no Muslim who suffers any bodily injury and forgoes it as charity except that Allah Almighty raises him a degree by it and erases a sin from him."
The Ansari said to Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him): Did you yourself hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: Yes, my ears heard it and my heart retained it. So the Ansari said: I forgive him for the sake of Allah. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No harm; but you will not be left like this either. And he ordered that he be given wealth.
