It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a woman's husband died, and another man indicated to her his wish to marry her. When she became lawful (for marriage), he married her. She remained (with him) four and a half months, then she gave birth to a child. The matter reached Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He sent (a messenger) to the woman and questioned her. She said: By Allah, it is his (first husband's) child. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked about the woman, and he was told only good about her. Then he sent for the women of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), gathered them and asked them about her case and her story. One of those women said to her: Did you use to menstruate? She said: Yes, I used to menstruate. That woman said: When were you last with your husband? She said: Before he died. That woman said: O Leader of the Believers! I will tell you the story of this woman. She conceived from her first husband, and she kept bleeding while pregnant, so her child withered because of the flow of blood. Then when she married the second husband and the fluid from that husband reached it, it revived and began to move, and because of that her bleeding also stopped. So when she gave birth, she gave birth to it at a full six months. The women said: She has told the truth about her case. So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) separated the two of them.
