أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، نا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ أنا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، أنا الشَّافِعِيُّ، أنا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، سَمِعَ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبَّادِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، يَقُولُ: أَخْبَرَنِي الْمُطَّلِبُ بْنُ حَنْطَبٍ أَنَّهُ طَلَّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ الْبَتَّةَ ثُمَّ أَتَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ: مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: قَدْ فَعَلْتُ قَالَ: فَقَرَأَ {وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ فَعَلُوا مَا يُوعَظُونَ بِهِ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ وَأَشَدَّ تَثْبِيتًا} [النساء: ٦٦] مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: قَدْ فَعَلْتُ، قَالَ: " أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ امْرَأَتَكَ فَإِنَّ الْوَاحِدَةَ تُبِتُّ " ⦗٥٦٢⦘.
Muhammad bin Abbad bin Ja'far said that al-Muttalib bin Hantab told him that he gave his wife the battah divorce (a final, irrevocable divorce), then came to Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned it. He asked: What led you to that? He said: I have done it. Then he recited this verse: "And if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer establishment" [Surah al-Nisa': 66]. What led you to that? He said: I have done it. He said: Keep your wife, for a single divorce separates her.
