Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) married me when he had no land, wealth or slave, except a horse. She says: I used to bring fodder for the horse and do his work; I looked after the horse and crushed date-stones for it; I gave it water and sewed his leather bucket; and I kneaded dough, but I could not bake bread well. Ansari girls used to bake bread for me, and they were truthful women. She says: I used to carry date-stones on my head from the land of Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), from a distance of two-thirds of a farsakh. She says: I was coming with the date-stones when I met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and with him was a group of Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). He (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and said: "Ride behind me." She says: I felt shy, and I knew the jealousy of my husband Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, your carrying date-stones on your head is harder than your riding with him (peace and blessings be upon him)." She says: Then Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me a servant who relieved me of looking after the horse; it was as if he had set me free.
