Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) ascended the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "What is the matter with people that they contract mut'ah marriage with women, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden it? Whomever I catch, I will stone him." If this is authentic, it shows that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade mut'ah marriage because he knew of its prohibition from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
