Bayhaqi 14143 — Temporary marriage (mut'ah)

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were young men, and we asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to castrate ourselves. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted marrying a woman for a fixed period in exchange for a garment. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "O you who believe, do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you." [Surah al-Ma'idah: 87]
Note: The narration of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah in Muslim indicates that this was before the conquest of Makkah or the conquest of Khaybar. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) died in 32 AH, and when he died he was over 60 years of age. The conquest of Khaybar took place in about 7 AH and the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was then about 40 years old, and youth comes before that. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade mut'ah with women at the time of Khaybar.
