Sayyidah Maymunah bint Kardam (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I was with my father when I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah riding his she-camel, and in the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a whip like the whip of a schoolteacher. I heard the Bedouins and the people saying: "The sound of footsteps, the sound of footsteps!" My father drew near and took hold of his foot, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) let him do so. Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I have not forgotten the second toe of the foot of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which was longer than all the other toes. He said to him: I was present in the army of Athran. She says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) knew that army. Then Tariq bin al-Muraqqa' said: Who will give me a spear for a good return? I said: What will its return be? He said: I will give him in marriage the first daughter born to me. Kardam (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I gave him my spear; a daughter was born to him and reached maturity. I came and said: Prepare my wife for me. Tariq said: Give another dower besides that and I will prepare her; otherwise, by Allah, I will not do it. I too swore and said: I will not do it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Of what age among women is she?" I said: She has seen the beginning of grey hair. He says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at me and said: "Leave her; there is no good in her for you." He says: That alarmed me, and he looked at me, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Neither you will be sinful nor he."
