Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated the story of Uhud, and that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had advised the Muslims to stay in Madinah, but many of the people insisted on nothing but going out to the enemy. He said: Had they held back at the word and command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it would have been better for them, but the decree and predestination prevailed. He said: Most of those who advised him (peace and blessings be upon him) to go out were men who had not taken part in Badr, and they knew the virtue that the people of Badr had attained. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had led the Friday prayer, he admonished the people and commanded them to strive hard and exert themselves. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished his prayer and sermon, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for his armour and put it on. Then he had it announced among the people that they should go out (to the enemy). When men of sound judgement saw this, they said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to stay in Madinah, and if the enemy entered upon us, we would fight them in the streets; and he (peace and blessings be upon him) knows better about Allah and what He wills, and revelation comes to him (peace and blessings be upon him) from heaven; yet we pressed him to go out. They said: O Prophet of Allah! Shall we stay, as you (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not befitting for a prophet, once he has put on the armour of war and announced to the people that they should go out to the enemy, to turn back until he has fought. I called you to this (staying in Madinah), but you refused everything except going out. So hold fast to the fear of Allah and to patience when you meet the enemy, and look to what I command you and carry it out." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out, and the Muslims went out with him (peace and blessings be upon him).
This is well known among the scholars of the military expeditions (maghazi), even though it is munqati' (its chain is broken); and we have recorded it connected with a hasan (good) chain.
