It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the day of Badr the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his sword named Dhu al-Fiqar as an extra share (from the spoils). Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: It was about it that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a dream on the day of Uhud. That was because, on the day of Uhud, when the idolaters came, the view of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was to stay in Madinah and fight them there. Those who had not taken part in Badr said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We will go out and fight them. They hoped to attain the virtue of the people of Badr. They kept insisting until he (peace and blessings be upon him) put on his war attire. Then those people regretted it and said: O Messenger of Allah! Stay (in Madinah); the decision is truly your decision. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not befitting for a prophet to take off his war attire after he has put it on, until Allah judges between him and his enemy." Before putting on his armour, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to them: "I saw in a dream that I was in a strong fortress, and I interpreted it as the city of Madinah. Then I saw that I had a ram riding behind me, and I interpreted it as the leader of the (enemy) squadron. I saw that my sword Dhu al-Fiqar had become notched, so there will be some harm among you. Then I saw cows being slaughtered: the cows, by Allah, are good." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this a second time as well.
